Ukrainian Deaf refugees at risk!
The vital support provided by MIGAM to deaf refugees from Ukraine is at risk! As of February 1, the MIGAM system, which has been instrumental in facilitating sign interpretation for this vulnerable group, has ceased to operate due to a lack of funding.
Since March 1, 2022, MIGAM interpreters have been tirelessly offering sign interpretation services to deaf refugees from Ukraine, ensuring they have access to essential communication support during their time of need. However, with the discontinuation of funding, this lifeline for deaf refugees is now in jeopardy.
The MIGAM team, comprising 13 dedicated interpreters working around the clock, has been instrumental in bridging the communication gap for deaf refugees, enabling them to navigate various challenges they encounter in their daily lives. From interactions with border guards and volunteers to access critical services, the assistance provided by MIGAM interpreters has been invaluable.
Despite their tireless efforts, MIGAM's funding has run dry, leaving them unable to continue their crucial work. As a result, deaf refugees from Ukraine are at risk of being left without the vital communication support they rely on to navigate life in Poland.
The impact of MIGAM's work extends far beyond mere interpretation services. By providing deaf refugees with access to communication support, MIGAM plays a pivotal role in upholding their fundamental human rights. Without the ability to communicate effectively, these individuals face significant barriers to accessing essential services and exercising their rights.
As concerned citizens, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that deaf refugees from Ukraine receive the support they need to thrive in their new environment. We cannot stand idly by while this essential service is jeopardized.
