About the Event:

The Proggy-Buggy Towel Contest 2025, hosted by DataArt, is a fast-paced, 42-minute online programming challenge filled with algorithmic puzzles and geeky humor. Celebrated on Towel Day (a tribute to Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), the contest is open to coders of all levels and backgrounds.

What to Expect:

  • 13 algorithmic problems of varying difficulty

  • Solo play — one coder, one machine, one towel

  • Choose any programming language

  • Online participation from anywhere (except sanctioned regions)

  • Fun extras: some problems have no solution — just write UNDECIDABLE

  • Certificates for all scorers, prizes for winners

Categories:

  • Amateurs – No international competitions

  • Professionals – Olympiad participants, no top-10 finishes

  • Superheroes – Olympiad finalists or past Proggy-Buggy winners

The Format:

  • 42 minutes total

  • Submissions are scored automatically with penalties for incorrect attempts

  • Winners are those who solve the most problems with the least penalty time

  • Results will be published within 2–3 days

Why “Towel”?

The contest honors Towel Day — May 25 — inspired by Douglas Adams. According to the book, a towel is the most useful item for a galactic traveler. In this contest, it’s your symbol of courage, readiness, and style.

Rules Recap:

  • No online help (no ChatGPT, no Google)

  • You may use any programming language from a long supported list

  • Solo participation only; one device per participant

  • Contest begins at 10:00 UTC (12:00 CEST)
