€27M for New Research Centres in Poland

Poland allocates €27M for new world-class research centres under FNP’s International Research Agendas

The Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) has announced a new call for proposals under its flagship International Research Agendas (MAB) programme, supported by the European Funds for a Modern Economy (FENG). A total of around €27 million (PLN 120 million) has been earmarked for this round, with individual projects eligible for up to €6.7 million (PLN 30 million) each. The application deadline is May 12, 2025.

The MAB programme is aimed at top-tier researchers from Poland and abroad who wish to establish cutting-edge research centres in Poland, focusing on globally relevant, breakthrough science. Each MAB centre is created in partnership with a foreign research institution and must concentrate on one of Poland’s key strategic R&D areas, known as Krajowe Inteligentne Specjalizacje (KIS).

“Our country needs places where research is conducted at the highest international level and where collaboration with global scientific communities is the norm. Such centres are crucial for Poland’s competitiveness in global science,” said Prof. Maciej Żylicz, President of FNP.

Over the last 35 years, FNP has consistently supported Polish science and innovative research teams. So far, 15 MAB centres have been established under this programme (through earlier POIR and now FENG funding), employing more than 500 researchers—almost half of whom come from outside Poland. According to Prof. Żylicz, this diversity of experience and scientific culture contributes significantly to groundbreaking discoveries.

Examples of success from the MAB programme include:

  • ICTER, the International Centre for Eye Research based at the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS in Warsaw, which is developing diagnostic tools capable of identifying eye diseases at the cellular level.

  • MagTop, from the Institute of Physics PAS, is exploring topological materials that could enable advancements in quantum computing, energy-efficient engines, and next-generation night-vision technologies.

Eligible applicants are research organisations based in Poland working in partnership with a foreign scientific entity. Each proposal must identify a scientific leader responsible for the project’s concept and execution. The submission deadline is May 12, 2025, at 16:00 local time.
